Momma’s Meat Pie w/Poutin Sauce #SundaySupper

So let me explain what #SundaySupper is all about. It’s a group of people who bring a dish to a Sunday dinner (virtually of course) and each week there is a new theme! It’s so fun so if you join me on Sunday’s you’ll get a list of awesome recipes from the best food bloggers! We tweet, we talk about it, we give shout outs of all the different recipes. Last week our theme was Memorial Day Recipes. I made the Grilled Balsamic Pork Kabobs.

I’m really excited about this weeks theme (mom please forgive me) It’s Heritage week. Make a dish from your heritage. Well my husband loves meat pie. Though his mother makes a great one, my grandmother (on my father’s french side LOL) made a out of this world meat pie! Unfortunatly she passed away last year and I don’t have the recipe however I’m going to start my own tradition and hope that over the years I can perfect it for my family! I always have Poutine Sauce in my pantry because my MIL always makes sure she picks us up some when she visits family in Canada. My husband says he’d rather ketchup on it and that I’m not going to change his “tradition” but we’ll see….I’m trying it with Poutine sauce!  So I hope you enjoy this weeks meal I chose from my heritage!

Make sure you check out what everyone else brought to #SundaySupper and check out the rest of this months themes!

June 24~ Is a Special Event but it’s still in the oven.  This event will be announced as soon as it’s perfectly baked!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 pounds ground pork (I had to use ground beef because my market was out of ground pork! Craziness!!)
1 large baking potato
1 large onion, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 dash ground allspice
1/2 cup water
1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust deep dish pie
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon paprika
Directions:

Bake the potato until done, 30 – 45 minutes in a preheated 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) oven. Peel and mash the potato.

Place the potato, onion, spices and water in a large frying pan.

Add the meat and simmer until very thick, for about one hour.

This is what it looks like half way through! Looking and smelling amazing!

As you can see by the picture, I have chunks, so the next time I make this (and their will be a next time!) I’ll mash the potato with a blender and chop the onions even smaller. This is how we learn and tell others is through our own recipes! Meanwhile, prepare your pastry. Yes I confess to using store bought dough because mastering the inside of a meat pie is just so much more important than the crust, so I’ll save that for another time!

Line a deep-dish pie plate with pastry.

Spoon in filling, spreading evenly. I pressed down on the meat to pack it in nice and tightly!

Cover with top crust and pinch around the sides with a fork.

Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with paprika, if desired. (I would have but I didn’t have any on hand since my hubby and I were at our summer camp (kidless! Yawhooo!) Make slit marks for venting.

Bake for 50 minutes at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). If edges brown too fast, cover with a strip of foil. (luckily I didn’t have to do that!! But I kept my eye on it!) How gorgeous does that look?

Unfortunatly here is where my gorgousness ends 🙁 Oh no no no it was spectacular! Tasted amazing however it did fall apart when I sliced and served it! I know it because I used ground beef and not ground pork, that wasn’t my intention however my grocery store had run out of ground pork when I went on Thursday! Who runs out of ground pork? LOL….ground pork actually holes it together more, so the next time I will insist on using the pork, plus it’s healthier! May not look pretty but it tasted good! (Don’t pay attention to the Daddy’s Sippy Cup Coaster I used as a hot plate!)

This is a great dish heated up again for leftovers, I’m heating it up later this week with mashed potatoes! YUM! This morning my hubby and I had a date night/date day alone with no kiddo so I made us a yummy brunch that my grandmother would have been proud of, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and meat pie baby!!

Don’t be jealous! Cook it up, you won’t regret it! The poutine sauce is straight from Canada so I don’t have a recipe for that however it’s just a certain kind of gravy, you could always make your own.

Let’s check out what everyone else brough to #SundaySupper! Everything looks soooo good!

I hope you brought your appetite this week!! FYI-pull up a chair and some food because you will be hungry after going through these dishes!
